Setting up Linphone

Linphone is a free softphone application with many handy features like call forwarding and creating an address book. For Windows and Mac, you can download the softphone here.

Configuring VoIP account in Linphone

Follow the below steps to install and configure Linphone on your mobile device. (Please note that the screenshots were taken using an Android device so the layout may differ from that of an iOS device, for instance).

Download the Linphone mobile app in the Play Store for Android or App Store for Apple iOS. If you are using a newer Huawei device and you are unable to find the application on Huawei AppGallery, download Huawei's Petal Search, to search for the Android file.

What you will need

You will be requested to enter the following details:

  • Display Name:¬†Internal extension number (e.g. 201)
  • Domain:¬†sip.voys.co.za
  • Username:¬†Account ID of the VoIP-account (is visible in¬†Freedom¬†under Admin >> VoIP Account)
  • Password:¬†Password of the VoIP-account (is visible in¬†Freedom¬†under Admin >> VoIP Account)
  • Transport:¬†TCP

Step By Step:

  1. Once you have logged in the Configuration Assistant will start. You will be prompted to select one of the following options while no account is configured on the device. Select "Use SIP Account"

  • You will be prompted to insert¬†'SIP Account details'.
  • This can be found by going to Admin then¬†going to¬†VoIP Accounts in our self-service portal Freedom. Ensure that¬†'Show Passwords'¬†is selected so that you can view your VoIP Account Password.

You will be requested to enter the following details:

  • Display Name:¬†Internal extension number (e.g. 201)
  • Domain:¬†sip.voys.co.za
  • Username:¬†Account ID of the VoIP-account (is visible in¬†Freedom¬†under Admin >> VoIP Account)
  • Password:¬†Password of the VoIP-account (is visible in¬†Freedom¬†under Admin >> VoIP Account)
  • Transport:¬†TCP

  • Your Username and User ID is the Account ID number listed above. The password is the password listed. The VoIP Account extension (the internal number is your Display Name)

  • If your phone is in power-saving mode you will see a pop-up indicating that this will have an effect on the application running in the background.¬†Select¬†"Do not show again" and click on¬†'Settings'.

  • Go to¬†Settings >> Advanced and select "background mode". This ensures that the application runs in the background.
  • You can set Dark Mode if you prefer. You can also name your device.¬†
  • Scroll down¬†and fill in your Display Name and Username

  • Select¬†Audio Codecs by going to Settings >> Audio.

  • Deselect¬†all Audio Codecs except iLBC

  • You are now ready to make and receive calls.

What to do if the application does not connect to your VoIP Account

  • Check¬†your internet connection. If it is unstable or does not provide spare capacity for VoIP, you may have difficulty connecting,¬†View¬†the following¬†link¬†on why the speed and reliability of your internet connection are important.

  • If the app status does not change to "connected" after logging in, you may need to double-check your 'Username'¬†and 'Password'.¬†
  • You may receive the following message on your device to indicate the error.Go to¬†the horizontal lines on the far left and¬†click on¬†the 'SIP Account'. (In this case, it is labeled 201).
  • This will take you to the¬†SIP Account¬†menu where you can edit your details.¬†
  • Click 'back'¬†to¬†save changes.

  • If all else fails,¬†delete¬†the 'SIP Account'¬†and start from scratch. To delete, go to the 'SIP Account menu'¬†(as above).¬†Scroll down¬†and¬†click¬†Delete

Once connected Please also check Android Settings

Please check for Permissions on the Phone:

  • Go to¬†Settings >>
  • Advanced >>
  • Then Android App Settings

Once in the Linphone App Info

Tab Permissions then Allow >> Microphone, Phone, Contacts

Samsung phones Click Settings on the Linphone App >> Advanced >> Battery Optimization Settings

Tab All Apps >> Find The Linphone App and Tab Don't Optimise

Please note that Huawei Phones will be different on this step. Please there Follow these settings : 
  • Phone settings >
  • Battery >
  • App launch¬†and then set your app to ‚ÄúManage manually‚ÄĚ and make sure everything is turned on.

1. Phone settings > Battery > App launch. This feature may or may not be available for all devices or labeled differently.

2. Turn off ‚ÄúManage all automatically‚Ä̬†

3. Make sure to ENABLE! all toggles.
