SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

What is SIP?

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the signaling protocol that powers VoIP telephony. It enables devices to set up, manage, and end phone calls over the internet, making real-time voice communication possible. On this page, you’ll find a clear overview of how SIP works, how to configure it properly, and what to check when you run into issues or error messages.

Secure Your SIP Traffic

SIP traffic can be vulnerable if not properly secured. To protect your phone system:

  • Use strong, unique SIP passwords
  • Disable any unused SIP accounts
  • Enable encrypted calling to keep your conversations private

If your current device doesn’t support encryption, we strongly recommend switching to a device or softphone that does.
